Do: Cows' Ball, 21 September, Lake Bohinj

If you're still waiting for an invite to the ball, we're here to save you – in the form of a bovine ball on the banks of stunning Lake Bohinj, about an hour outside of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. On the third Sunday in September, Slovenians have a big old knees up (or should that be hooves up?) for Daisy and friends as a kind of winter homecoming. In true dairy style, there's lots of bells, folk dancing and CHEESE. slovenia.si

Stay: Lesar Hotel Angel, Gornji Tr 7, £130pn

Boutique hotels are few and far between in the Slovenian capital, but Lesar Hotel Angel in the historic old town manages to pull off a unique vibe. It's set in an old townhouse, and surrounded by bars and restaurants, which means minimum stumbling distance if you do overdo it on the local honey liquor. angelhotel.com/si

See: Lake Bled

Once you've seen one lake, you've seen 'em all, right? Er, no – not when Lake Bled is one of Slovenia's stunners, and is small enough to wander around in a couple of hours. In the middle of it there's a tiny island that you can swim across to (in the summer months only, mind – winter is cold here). The lake is surrounded by good mountain biking trails too, if you fancy getting your heart rate going a little more. slovenia.si
