DO: HOFBURG SILVESTER BALL, 31 DECEMBER

Find yourself watching Strictly Come Dancing and just wishing you could put your foot through the TV? You know, in order to step into a fancy ballroom and have a dance? Well, get yourself down to the Hofburg Silvester Ball (formerly the Kaiserball) and do exactly that. Held in the fantastic Hofburg Vienna Palace, it's part of a series of lavish balls taking place all over Vienna at this time of year. This one is the most famous, what with it taking place on arguably the most important date on the calendar (because we made it another year without the world exploding). hofburgsilvesterball.com

STAY: THE 25 HOURS HOTEL, LERCHENFELDER STRASSE

Don't worry, this isn't some sort of mind-bending and impossible vortex in the space-time continuum, it's just a hotel with a funny name. It's also a really nice hotel with a funny name. Nice, but certainly not normal – it takes its inspiration from the circus, so expect the unexpected (they even have a mermaid's cave). You might not want to listen to us recommend a hotel that has "we are all mad here" blazoned across its website, but it helps. 25hours-hotels.com

EAT: MOTTO, SCHÖNBRUNNER STRASSE 30

Do you like hanging around near famous people? What about eating near them? Well first, we're calling the police, and second, here's a tip: go to Motto if you want to hob-nob with Austria's top-tier celebs. Not only that, but the food's pretty lovely too. And it looks great as well – they aimed for an 'innovative living room' with the decor, and we'd say they nailed it. It's a homely and cosy dining experience, as long as you don't mind a load of strangers in your house eating all your food. motto.at
