The basics

The UK's largest celebration of African music and culture, taking place in Liverpool because why not?

The festival

Want to hear African music but left your passport down a sofa which you've now sold to a person whose phone number you've lost? Well, you're in luck, because Africa Oye takes place in Liverpool, and you won't need any passport to go there.

Starting in 1992 as a series of small gigs, the fest has grown in size and has been located in Sefton Park since 2002. Parks are generally bigger than gig venues.

While African music is the mainstay of the festival, other genres/regions are represented, with South American, Caribbean, Soca and Reggae all included. What's more, there are tonnes of stalls (about forty) with food, drink, arts and crafts, so the whole shebang is a cultural experience not even The Culture Show could match. Shebang!
