The festival
Curated by the band Laurel Collective and friends nine years ago, the little independent festival In The Woods is something entirely unique. Originally born as a knees-up in a forest for 80 friends and family, it has grown into an exclusive boutique festival for just 1,000 revellers. The lineup and location are kept secret, and only revealed to ticket holders a few days before the event. Don't let this scare you off though – the festival has become known for featuring some new and unique talent over the years. And if music doesn't move you, there's inspirational and innovative art installations throughout the site.
Avoiding all commercial avenues, all the food and drink is kept in-house, so there won't be a burger van or a plate of soggy chips in sight. All the meat, vegetables, ale and cider is grown and brewed by local producers within one mile of the festival site, so you'll be filling up on their homecooked Potjie Pots – huge cast-iron cauldrons of stews and curries, which cook slowly over a camp fire throughout the day, stirred with a huge handcarved wooden spoon. But if this doesn't take your fancy, you can bring your own food and drink, and even barbecue it all on site.
Keeping the fairytale theme going, each year there's a weird and wonderful theme. In 2014 it was 'worship of the absurd, characters, creatures and deities' – we'll let you decide exactly what that was like…
Our tip
Be sure to grab a burger. Not only does the meat come from the festival's own site, but they handmake the 1,000-plus burgers the night before the festival begins so they're guaranteed to be super fresh.
