The basics

Steel City hosts one of the biggest musical events in the North of England at a bargain price.

The festival

Sheffield’s Tramlines festival, named in honour of the city’s historic public transportation network, is fittingly hosted in a number of venues across the city including the University of Sheffield campus, Sheffield Cathedral, The Harley and the leafier main stage on Devonshire Green.

What sets the festival apart is how staggeringly good value it is. Day tickets costing less than £15. Unbelievably, the festival was totally free event in the past, only charging for tickets in recent years as its lineups have expanded, bringing in bigger acts like Public Enemy, Katy B and, er, Sister Sledge. Particularly impressive is the dance music takeover of the University of Sheffield, which features a number of talented international and UK DJs.

Our tip

Be prepared to do a bit of walking, while most of the venues are dotted around the city centre, a few are a bit further out on the fringes. Alternatively, you can hop on a bus instead - not only will you avoid getting sore feet - but you’ll get to hear exclusive acoustic sets performed by some of the festival’s acts.
